Thruxton August 2021 Race Report
An interesting weekend! Struggled with the setup all weekend but it started to come good in Race 3!
On Saturday morning the FP1 first practice session had started well but the session was stopped by a red flag. I hadn’t had a chance to put in a fast lap and was left stranded down in 26th, much to my (and the team’s) annoyance.
With no red flags, FP2 was much better though, we were able to complete our test set-ups from the first shortened session and then move on to our other options. We just about got everything in and then it was down to the final decisions on set up for qualifying this afternoon. Drama in the qualifying session though as I managed to recover the car from a tyre blowout at over 140mph on the entry to Church corner (due to tyre damage picked up on track), which sent me flying backwards into a potentially damaging crash. But I avoided the barriers and limped back to the pits, however the incident spoilt the qualifying session.
In Race 1, I was able to make some early passes, but then unfortunately put a wheel on the grass and lost 5 places in the process. Race 2 was better, started in P16 but finished in P13 — nearly got into P12 and the reverse-grid draw, so close!
Started Race 3 in P13 and hopeful of a great final race of the day, but that was soon ruined after a couple of crashes on the first corner resulted in four laps under a safety car, giving us a maximum of 19 laps of racing. The car was feeling great now with the revised setup but there were another two safety-car spells, so I stayed in 13th place. However useful points for the team.
Onto Croft now in three weeks’ time. See you there!
