Race Diary Rockingham

What a weekend of mixed emotions for myself and the team at Laser Tools Racing!

Saturday’s qualifying session went really well for us. The car I had beneath me felt great and was performing really well; this resulted in a very strong lap that put me in P8 on the grid for the first race with a time that was just .3 of a second off pole position!

We had chosen the soft tyres and realised that Race 1 was going to be a struggle as the track surface is bad on tyres. However the tyre choice is submitted prior to qualifying and we did not expect P8. From the first lap it felt like there was no grip and the tyres never really came in, and the drop-off was a lot worse than expected. On the second last lap I hit the brakes going into Tarzan hairpin and the front wheels locked and wouldn't unlock when I came back off the brakes. This led to a trip into the gravel and the end of our race.

This DNF (Did Not Finish) meant that on Race 2 we had to start at the back in P28. Sounds bad, but on the harder tyres the car felt awesome and I enjoyed fighting a determined battle to finish at P13 on the chequered flag. I was on a roll and with a few more laps it would have easily been a top ten finish which would have put us in the position for the reverse grid, and with the pace of the car who knows what would have happened?

Race 3 and I was enjoying a strong race; Late on in the race I was up inside the top 10 and trying to make a move that would have resulted in getting into the top 5, but I made contact with Adam and dropped down the order. At the start of the final lap I turned into the second corner, looked up for my exit and the next thing I knew I was in a field with a sore hand, a headache, and a battered car. I had been hit by Hunter Abbott, the collision resulting in substantial damage to both cars.

At Rockingham, the results didn't go our way but it was another big jump forward with the pace we had. So onwards and upwards to Silverstone!
