Aiden competes in first meeting of new TCR UK Series at Silverstone
TCR UK — In the first meeting of this new series Aiden Moffat qualifies in P2 and finishes Race 1 in second place
As well as the BTCC, Laser Tools-backed Aiden Moffat has agreed to enter the exciting new TCR UK race series, which held its first session over the Easter weekend. What's more — it's a two car team! Joining Aiden on the grid is ex-BTCC driver Derek Palmer.
The TCR series has become very popular world-wide over the past few years and although the touring cars look similar to the BTCC cars they are based more on the actual production cars, whereas the BTCC examples are pure racing cars, with only a visual resemblance to the original model. TCR is a motorsport concept launched in 2015 by WSC Ltd. that has revolutionised touring car competition, as it has been approved and adopted by many championships and series all over the world, becoming the perfect platform for customer racing. The strictly controlled TCR Technical Regulations provide close and exciting racing while keeping the running costs under control. The figures speak for themselves – after only three years, there are more than 600 TCR cars from 11 different brands competing in over 30 TCR championships globally.
Aiden commented: "Worldwide, TCR is a fantastic championship with huge manufacturer support. And our cars are brilliant — they're very good to drive."
Laser Tools Racing has chosen to run two spectacular-looking TCR-spec Alfa Romeo Giuliettas prepared by Romeo Ferraris in Milan. After being delivered direct from Italy, on Tuesday 27th March the cars were delivered to AST Signs Ltd in Penrith, where the new Laser Tools Racing livery graphics were waiting. Three days later the two new Alfas were at Silverstone, ready for some quick shakedown testing before the practice and qualifying sessions on the Saturday 31st.
And Aiden qualified in P2, just missing pole position by 2 tenths of a second. What a drive!
In the first race Aiden started in P2 and after an exciting drive finished in P2. So a podium on his first time out in the new TCR car. For race 2 they have another rather complicated "reverse grid" formula to decide grid positions — Aiden had to start from P10. No problem for your favourite touring-car driver — he zipped through the pack from 10th to 4th place in one lap! By half way through the race he was up into 2nd place and stayed there for lap after lap, defending his place successfully from a very determined VW Golf GTi.
Until a fuelling problem reared its ugly head just 1½ laps from the finish! Aiden had to pull over into a safe position and was awarded with a DNF (did not finish). Gutted!
But what a fabulous, determined achievement for the team, with just seven days to pick up two cars in Italy and race them the following weekend at the UK's most famous race track.
